-Nutritional Supplement Industry, created and driven by “the baby boomer’s”, is the fastest growing sector within the Health and Wellness Industry. It seems as if there is a new product hitting the market every day and each one claiming to be the panacea. Just as it is to select the best foods for you and your family choosing the right nutritional supplement is as daunting a task. People are bombarded by new products and information every day. Who knows which is the right product for them?
When you observe, first hand, the buying habits of nutraceutical consumers you are constantly drawn to the same conclusion. People spend more time thinking about the shoes that they put on their feet than they do the nutrition that they put into their bodies! I have watched consumers purchase bottle after bottle of the cheaper, popular, top selling, synthetic multivitamins, for example, and have often asked myself; “would these people continue to purchase these inferior products if they really knew how useless they really are?
Now we are not talking about rocket science here. We are talking about doing some homework, applying a little common sense and making an informed decision.

Our body’s are organic mechanisms and should only be fed all natural and organic nutritional supplements. It is no coincidence that natural organic supplements are more readily absorbed by our body than their synthetic counterparts (only 50% of a synthetic vitamin can be utilized somewhat efficiently).
It is also very important that whenever possible you select supplements that are made from all natural organic materials. The reason for this is that natural plant remedies, for example, are effective because of many other chemical constituents found within the plant. What western science has done is isolate a particular constituent that they believe to contain the therapeutic component within the plant, recreate it in a laboratory and add it to their supplement product. This is a much more inexpensive process than manufacturing high quality natural organic supplements and is the reason for their low price points. It is our opinion that synthetic nutritional supplements are inferior products as compared to their natural counterparts. Apparently the body agrees with us because it metabolizes 30-50% more of natural nutritional supplements than it does the synthetics.
That is not to say that science does not have an important roll in this industry. If it were not for science we would not understand how the body functions. An especially important contribution by science to nutrition is incite into the bio-chemical world at the cellular level and the subsequent creation of organic micro-nutrients (Nutraceuticals). Micro-nutrition has revolutionized the nutritional supplement industry because it gave manufacturers the opportunity to create supplements that deliver maximum bio-available nutrition to the body. Bio-availability is perhaps the most important yet overlooked aspects of nutrition.
bio-availability /bio·avail·a·bil·i·ty/ (bi?o-ah-val?ah-bil´i-te) the degree to which a drug or other substance becomes available to the target tissue after administration.
Basically this term refers to the difference between the amount of nutrition that is actually used by the body and the amount that was administered. One way the measurement of bio-availability is used is when we looked at the synthetic verses natural supplement issue where 50% less of the synthetic was used by the body than the same amount of the natural product. This makes the natural product 30-50% more bio-available than the synthetic.
Another important issue that effects the bio-availability of nutrients is the delivery system of the supplement. Nutritional supplements basically are produced in 4 forms, Tablet, capsule, liquid and chew-able. The least desirable of these forms is the tablet form which so happens to be the system of choice for the popular synthetic inexpensive supplements. The main problem with this delivery system is that supplements in this form only deliver about 10% of the product as bio-available nutrients. Health care workers often refer to these tablets as “bedpan bullets” because that is where the remains of the supplements end up. In the patient’s bed pan! There are also documented cases of sewer workers finding bedpan bullets floating in the sewer system with the names of the products still visible.
Now I’d like you to think about this for a moment. The top selling nutritional supplements are made from synthetic materials (created in a laboratory). These nutrients are mostly introduced to the body in a virtually non-digestible tablet form (10% digestible on average) often referred to, by health care professionals, as “bedpan bullets”. If the product is supposed to contain 100% RDA nutritional value and only actually delivers only 10% of the nutrients administered you would have to take 9 times more of the cheaper inferiour supplement just to actually realize that 100% RDA! Correct?
WRONG!
The 10% above is related to the delivery system not the actual nutrients within the tablet.
We now have to factor in the 30%-50% absorption rate (bio-availability) of the synthetic materials.
Nutriants actually delivered = 3%-5% of RDA
Let’s make things interesting here. Let’s say that I am 50% inaccurate. At best you will still only be getting 25% of RDA of the nutrition that you paid full price for. Which means that you have to take 4 times the recommended dosage to get to that 100% RDA and will be paying 4 times over what you have already paid for the month to reach that 100%. Think of it this way. When you purchase high octane fuel for your car you pay more more at the pump than you do for the lower octane product but you get more mileage per tank full. When you stop and compare the difference between the price per gallon between the high and lower octane products and figure in the actual mileage you get from both you will find that the cost per mile is about the same.
Interesting isn’t it?
In that light doesn’t it make sense to just purchase the better product? Think about it!
